Degen DE1123 Review by Drive-In-Freak

Possibly the best for a public transportation commuter or office worker because it's outstanding in a high noise environment. This is where the DSP circuit really shines.

The recording issue as been resolved by Kaito/Degen. The latest batch will record at a reasonable level that does not change with the volume control with one small exception...it has to be up over volume level 03 (barley audible through the speaker) or the recording is silent. There may be other improvements.

THE GOOD:

-AM and FM broadcast bands are both very sensitive and selective for it's size. I've found it out performance what is thought of as the best DX (long distance reception) pocket radios available today (Sangean DT200** and Sony SRF-59).

The AM/MW is not up to the level of the best of the best portables (such as a GE Superadio, Panasonic RF-2200, Sony ICF-2010) of course, but for it's size it's simply amazing...and it does come reasonably close. Yes, I was surprised by this too. How they managed to do what they did with such a small coil is beyond me. Comparing it to a Grundig s350 during the daytime I was shocked to find that they were so close in performance that I couldn't tell much of a difference at all.
After reading other reviews I can't help but wonder if they have made an improvement in this aria as well.
However, it does have one minor strange quirk that's easy to get around###

FM reception is simply amazing.

-SW selectivity is very good, sensitivity is average for it's size class. Good for a pocket radio..perhaps slightly better than expected in it's price class.

-In a noisy environment such as a city bus or office building I have found that this one will pull in what other radios simply can't at all. It will ONLY pick up the frequency it's tuned into, so computer and other forms of Rf interference are much less of a problem for it than a standard (non-DSP) radio.

-The MP3 player remembers where you where when you shut it off, switch to the radio, or listen to recorded files. This comes in very handy for audiobooks and podcasts. It's capable of recognizing separate files and you can play them individually...also quite handy for podcasts and audiobooks as well as listing to individual albums.

-Microphone recoding is decent for voice

-Sound quality of FM and MP3 is very good and powerful though headphones. Through the speaker it's good for a small (2 1/2") speaker. It has a lager speaker than most modern small portables.

-Real and easy to find AAA cell power source. This alone makes it worth having.

THE BAD:

-### A few (maybe 20% of) weak AM/MW stations will sequel unless the volume is set to 08 or over 18. With headphones that have (or a separate) in-line volume control this is not a problem, however though the speaker it's a bit of an annoyance. With strong and medium strength signals it doesn't happen, nor does it do it with all weak signals.
Sometimes it takes about 2 sec or so to lock into a signal. It's minor annoyance that doesn't happen too often.

-No tone control or equalizer.

-No ID3 tag reading. It displays and acts like a CD changer. Folders and tracks are labeled as numbers only. No "scrolling".

-MP3 player slow to respond, is silent during FF and REW scrolling though a track (but you do not have to hold the button down) and it is not time progressive. You have to hit stop before changing folders.

-FM is recorded in mono only.

-AM/MW sound quality is not the best through a good set of headphones, though adequate for voice. Music is listenable and not exactly awful, but it could be better.

-1GB of memory and no expansion slot! In this day and age? Really?

ALL IN ALL:

To me the good far outweighs the bad. I love the idea of using REAL batteries. It has great reception and the ability to fight off interference even in harsh environments.

My biggest complaint is it's serious lack of memory as well as inability to read ID3 tagging or ANY text for that matter.

Degen DE1123 Review by Charles A. Fleming "FreeMind" (USA)

Ive read the other reviews here And I disagree with most of them. There is no doubt that this slim compact but solid feeling device could not well stand being dropped often but I find the build quality excellent and I like the basic black design. I love the crisp green backlight.Playback over the speaker, though lacking much bass is very clear and carries well. I can set it on my work bench and listen unencumbered by headphones. Inspite of its chinglish I found the manual fairly easy to understand for what I want to do. Fm reception is excellent for a portable this size and am is decent but doesnt compare to my eton e100. My only complaint is the short battery life but at least it holds the settings long enough to slip in new batteries (quickly) and it comes with rechargeable batteries and charger. To listen to radio, mp3 music files and emusic audiobooks it is a great unit with really no competition unless you want to spend quite a bit more money; I don't. I highly recommend it.

Degen DE1123 Review by SS

I run a delivery route in a truck that has no radio, so I needed something that was loud enough that I could hear it over my noisy truck, and could maintain a signal moving around. On both counts it did about as well as I expected- I can't hear it on the highway but cruising through the streets it works fine, and the FM for the most part is clear as a bell, and is at least consistent in the spots where it doesn't work as well. The AM band doesn't work well in the steel truck on the move, but is great indoors. It is lightweight and very portable- fits in my pocket. Comes with rechargeable batteries with an internal charger- so you just plug an adapter into the unit to charge it. The MP3 and recording feature are both excellent. You can record internally straight off the radio or even externally off of a TV and it works very well, the sound quality is great. The supplied Degen batteries on a full charge will give you about 5 hours of uninterrupted play, which is perfect for me. Alkalines will go longer, about 50% or so, but it still wipes them out relatively quick- I don't recommend it. A name brand rechargeable might fare better- but I haven't tried.

The bad news is there is pretty much no way to just pick this thing up and start using it- You must read the instructions, and they are very poorly written (ESL). I'm still not entirely sure how everything works, this thing can supposedly do all sorts of amazing stuff, but much of it is just not worth the trouble of figuring out. If you want to have a ton of MP3s on there, you'll need to memorize them by track- because there is no display outside the track number and position. It's also very annoying when you accidentally turn on the alarm or sleep function or something like that, as it's not easy to turn off. But one trick I've learned is that you can just hit the little reset on the back. It doesn't clear your presets or erase any files (or at least hasn't in my case), just clears the date and time and any alarms and sleeps and such that you may have turned on by accident. I don't bother resetting the date and time anymore lol...

All in all, it's a good product. I'm sure it would get 5/5 if not for how complicated it is. I use it as an FM radio and MP3 player with a fairly limited library while I'm on the move, and for that it's great. As I said, if you have the patience to figure it all out, I'm sure this product is amazing- but that's if.
